Genentech authors flip PNAS study from corrected to retracted following Retraction Watch coverage – Retraction Watch

The authors of a 2006 paper have retracted their article following an extensive correction in January – and a Retraction Watch story noting the correction missed at least one additional issue with the work. “Death-receptor activation halts clathrin-dependent endocytosis,” published in July 2006 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has been cited 99 times, according to Clarivate’s Web of Science. Most of the authors were affiliated with the biotech company Genentech.  As we previously reported, commenters on PubPeer raised issues about possible image duplications, spurring the authors to review the work. The January correction addressed about two dozen…

Red Light Myopia Therapy Can Injure Your Retina

Over the last few years, low-level red light (LLRL) therapy has become popular to control myopia, or nearsightedness, especially in children. In LLRL therapy, children are instructed to look into a red light-emitting instrument for three minutes, twice a day, five days a week, for the duration of the treatment period, which could last years.    Studies reported the treatment as effective and responsible for significant reduction in myopia progression and it is already being used to address myopia in over 100,000 pediatric patients.     Despite passing clinical trials it’s not safe in all cases, so stricter standards need to…

Taking it Easy on the Tour du Mont Blanc – Rick Steves’ Travel Blog

While the Tour du Mont Blanc is demanding, it’s not a particularly difficult hike. It’s just long, with lots of altitude gain and loss, and always scenic. On my recent trek around the mountain with three friends, it seemed each of us had a weak spot: knees, toes, or lungs. For some, the challenge was the uphill part, and for others (with weak knees), it was going downhill. We just took it easy, with lots of little breaks. David, Sue, Shelley, and I shared the entire hike on Mont Blanc. But to be free to go our own pace, we…

Could Plant Communication Help Save Argentina’s Crops?

An innovative biotech startup is using nature’s own signals to fight crop-killing insects—without toxic chemicals. TUCUMÁN, Argentina — When dozens of desperate farmers flocked to Victoria Coll’s laboratory in Tucumán, Argentina, she knew her research had finally met its moment. It was September 2023, and the visitors were on edge about the corn leaf hopper—a four-millimeter-long bug already decimating the grain crops nationwide. Traditional insecticides had failed, leaving farmers facing billions in losses. Coll, a botanist with a doctorate in analytical chemistry, was certain the answer lay in cracking the code plants use to communicate with insects: their scent. “Smell…
