Cebu hopes for return of missing Argao pulpit panels

Photo courtesy of Wikipedia With the return of the Boljoon pulpit panels after about four decades, it turns out that another church in Cebu Province also lost its old pulpit panels many years ago. Built from 1788 to the 1830s, the church of Argao still has—although now unpalatably gilded—its impressive retablos and pulpit with carved, polychromed panels, most likely similar in character to the Boljoon panels. Details are sketchy on the designs of the panels and when these were stolen, but Cebu’s heritage sector is also hoping for their return. Barber wanted to find a way for his fellow Hall of Famers to play on the big stage and showcase their personalities during retirement. After all, seemingly every retired NFL star picks up the game of golf and immediately becomes addicted to it shortly thereafter. So Barber had…

Despite complaints from iconic coaches, don’t expect NCAA to change double-regional format for women’s tournament

TAMPA, Fla. — The complaints could not be ignored. From Birmingham, Alabama, to Spokane, Washington, last weekend, some of the most prominent coaches in women’s college basketball took aim at the NCAA’s fairly-new double-regional format. First to loudly voice his disapproval with the format — where eight teams play a total of six games in the span of four days in one arena — was UConn coach Geno Auriemma, the 71-year-old Hall of Famer who owns 11 national championships. Auriemma’s protests were focused around the availability of court time for practices and shootarounds, which he argues impacts rest and recovery…

Bruce Pearl can become the face of college basketball, for better or worse, at Final Four

In the last four years, college basketball has seen six national championship-winning head coaches announce their retirement from the sport. The number of active head coaches with at least one national championship on their resume? Six. The slew of recent retirements has left college basketball — a sport where the head coaches are typically the defining stars — without a defined set of names to lead the game into the first stage of its next era. Bill Self is still trucking along at Kansas. Same for Tom Izzo at Michigan State. Rick Pitino is doing Rick Pitino things at St.…
